MacBook water damage repair
A spill is the one MacBook problem where minutes matter. Here is exactly what to do right now, why a Mac that seems fine can fail a week later, and what happens when you bring it in.
Spilled something right now?
Do this, in this order
- Second 1
Unplug it
Pull the charger and anything else connected. Mains power and liquid are the worst combination.
- Second 10
Force it off
Press and hold the power button (Touch ID on newer models) until the screen goes dark. Do not wait for it to sleep, and do not stop to save work.
- Minute 1
Tent it, keyboard down
Open the lid wide and stand the Mac upside down like a tent, so liquid runs out of the keyboard rather than further in. Blot what you can see with a soft cloth.
- Minute 5
Leave it off
No power button “just to check”, no charger, no hair dryer — heat drives liquid deeper and can warp parts. Skip the rice: it does not pull liquid off a circuit board and can leave dust and starch behind.
- Same day
Bring it in
The battery inside is still powering parts of the board. The sooner it is opened, disconnected and cleaned, the better the odds.

The part nobody tells you
Why it can die a week later
A MacBook is never fully off while its battery is connected: parts of the logic board stay powered so the Mac can wake, charge and keep time. When liquid reaches that board, the small currents flowing through it start an electrochemical reaction with the metal of the components and their connections.
That corrosion is slow and invisible from outside. It can take days to eat through a connection — which is why so many spilled Macs keep working for a while and then fail without warning, often well after the liquid has dried.
Opening the case, disconnecting the battery and cleaning the affected area stops that process. Every hour it runs makes the eventual repair bigger.
Not all spills are equal
What you spilled matters
Plain water
Tap water carries minerals that conduct and corrode once power flows through them. Least bad, but still urgent.
Coffee and tea
Acidic, often with milk and sugar. Leaves sticky residue under keys and on the board.
Soda, juice, wine
Sugar and acid together. Corrosion starts quickly and keys gum up as it dries.
Beer
Sugars and residues similar to soda. Treat it as just as urgent.

What happens when you bring it in
- We open it and disconnect the battery, so the board is no longer powered.
- We look at where the liquid went — keyboard, trackpad, charging ports, logic board — and how far corrosion has spread.
- We tell you what we found and quote for cleaning and any parts it needs. Nothing further happens without your go-ahead.
- We are straight about the odds. Many spilled MacBooks come back fully. Some need a part such as a keyboard. Some have board damage that is not worth paying to fix, and we will say so.
Keys sticky but the Mac otherwise works? See keyboard and trackpad repair. Not powering on at all? See MacBook won’t turn on or charge.
Liquid damage
Questions
My MacBook worked fine after the spill. Do I still need to bring it in?
It is worth having it checked. Liquid that reaches the board keeps reacting with the metal while the battery supplies power, and corrosion can take days to cause a failure. A Mac that seems fine today can stop working next week.
Can you recover my files from a water-damaged MacBook?
On MacBooks from about 2018 onwards, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted by the T2 or Apple silicon chip, so files can only be read by getting that board working again. That is one more reason to bring it in quickly — and to keep a backup.
How long does a liquid-damage repair take?
It depends entirely on what we find when the case is open. Some machines only need cleaning; some need parts such as a keyboard or a charging port; some have board damage. We tell you what we found and quote before going further.
Does AppleCare+ cover a spill?
AppleCare+ covers accidental damage, including liquid, for a service fee. If your Mac is covered, check that route first — it can be the cheaper option. If it is not covered, or you need it back sooner, bring it to us.
Is my MacBook worth repairing after a spill?
Often, especially when it is caught early. Once we have opened it we will tell you plainly whether it is worth the money, rather than starting a repair that costs more than the machine is worth.
