Which macOS can my MacBook run?
The newest macOS a MacBook can install is set by the model, and it decides how long the Mac keeps getting new apps and security fixes. Look yours up below, or find it in the ladder of versions further down.

macOS 27 Golden Gate
Released September 14, 2026 — Apple silicon only. Intel MacBooks stop at macOS Tahoe 26 or earlier.
Why one number can give several answers
Apple reuses a model number when it updates the chip inside an unchanged case. The 13-inch MacBook Air A1466, for example, was sold from 2012 to 2017 — and the 2012 version stops at Catalina while the 2017 version runs Monterey. When that happens the lookup shows every year, and Apple menu → About This Mac tells you which one is yours.

What “unsupported” really means
The Mac keeps working. The updates slow down.
A MacBook that has reached its last macOS does not stop working. What changes is the stream of updates behind it.
- New features stop. They arrive with each new macOS, and your Mac can no longer install it.
- Security fixes carry on, for a while. Apple does not promise a date. In practice, when macOS 27 arrived on September 14, 2026, Apple released security updates the same day for macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS Sequoia 15, and again on September 28. The newest Sonoma 14 update on Apple’s list is from August 6, 2026.
- Apps follow later. Developers drop old versions on their own schedule, so the first warning is often an app that will not update.
For an older Intel MacBook, that is the real question behind a repair: not “can it be fixed?” but “how many useful years will it have afterwards?” Our repair or replace guide works through it with Apple’s vintage and obsolete rules as well.
Apple silicon · 2020 onwards
On the current version
Every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with an M-series chip, from the M1 models of late 2020 to the M5 models of 2026, plus the MacBook Neo, can install macOS 27 Golden Gate. A screen, battery or keyboard repair on one of these is almost always worth doing.
Intel · 2012 to 2020
At the end of the line
Intel MacBooks stop somewhere between Catalina and Tahoe. A cheap repair — a battery, a charging port — can still make good sense for a Mac that does what you need. A big one deserves a second thought; we will tell you honestly if we think so.
macOS versions
Questions
What is the latest version of macOS?
macOS 27 Golden Gate, released on September 14, 2026. It runs on the MacBook Neo and on every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Apple silicon, from the 2020 M1 models onwards.
Can an Intel MacBook run macOS 27 Golden Gate?
No. Apple’s compatibility list for macOS 27 contains only Apple silicon Macs. macOS Tahoe 26 is the last version for Intel Macs, and among MacBooks only two Intel models got it: the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019 and the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 with four Thunderbolt 3 ports.
When does my Mac stop getting security updates?
Apple does not publish an end date. On its security releases page, Apple shipped updates for macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS Sequoia 15 on the same day macOS 27 arrived, and again on September 28, 2026. The latest macOS Sonoma 14 update listed there is 14.8.9, from August 6, 2026.
Will a repair let my MacBook run a newer macOS?
No. The newest version a MacBook can install is fixed by the model, not by its condition. A repair keeps the Mac working on the newest version its model supports — which is why the version limit belongs in any repair-or-replace decision.
How do I see which macOS my Mac is running now?
Choose Apple menu → About This Mac. The window shows the macOS name and version number. If you are not on the newest version your model supports, Software Update in System Settings will offer it.
My MacBook model number covers several years. Which row is mine?
About This Mac shows the exact model name, such as “MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)”. Match that name to the table. If the Mac will not start, the serial number on the bottom case can be checked on Apple’s coverage site to find the model year.
